Ana Rivas Logan arrived in Florida in 1968, born in Nicaragua to Cuban exiled parents; she is the epitome of the American dream. Arriving in America, without speaking the language and virtually penniless proved to be a challenge that she overcame. Ms. Logan graduated from Miami Coral Park Senior High School and went on to Florida International University (FIU) where she received a degree in Computer Science.

After a short stint in the computer industry where she designed software, she discovered that her true passion was teaching. She began teaching Computer Science and eventually became a school site and district administrator in Miami-Dade County. She later went on to acquire a Master of Computer Science as well a Master of Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She has often stated that through her students she gained more knowledge and enriched her life.

Ms. Logan was first elected to public office in 2004 when she unseated an incumbent with 67% of the vote to represent the school board‘s district seven seat. As a member of the fourth largest school district in the country, Ms. Logan was responsible for overseeing a 7 billion dollar budget for 340,000 students. She ran unopposed in 2008.While a school board member she brought forth many initiatives which were unanimously approved and implemented in Dade County Public Schools. Among those initiatives was the electronic grade book, which allowed parents the option of viewing their child’s progress from a computer anywhere in the world. After many accomplishments in the local school board, Ms. Logan decided to take her fight to Tallahassee.

In April of 2009 she launched her campaign for State Representative in District 114. In November of 2010 she won the three man race with 64% of the votes. Her first legislative session in Tallahassee proved to be very fruitful. As a freshman legislator Ms.Logan managed to get six bills out of the house and two signed by the Governor. One of those bills was HB 281 Value Adjustment Boards, a property tax reform measure, which brought 30 million dollars to Dade County Public Schools. In spite of her big accomplishments there were also obstacles as she continued to fight for the citizens of this great state, as she was the only freshmen to vote against paycheck protection. The 2012 Legislative Session was just as successful with the passage of HB 509, which allows Pharmacist to administer the pneumonia vaccine and the shingles vaccine (with a prescription). HB 701 Florida Evidence Code also passed the house unanimously. This bill allows hearsay evidence to be used during trial in domestic violence cases. She currently serves on several House committees, among them Business and Consumer Affairs Subcommittee, Health & Human Services Access Subcommittee, Health & Human Services Committee, PreK-12 Appropriations, Government Operations and Senate Redistricting.

Outside of the legislature Ms. Logan serves as a board member for NALEO (National Association of Hispanic Elected Officials) which played a key role in the 2010 census. NALEO has also helped to register and motivate the Latino community to get involved in the electoral process. Ms. Logan was also part of the CUBE (Council of Urban Boards of Education) board of directors and was the first Hispanic woman to be elected to serve on a national level.

Ms. Logan’s career as an educator and public servant has been a success, but for her, the greatest success has been her three children and her two grandchildren, 1 year- old Liam and 2 year-old Ayla.
